Pregnant? Make Sure a Trip to the Dentist Is In your Future

Maternity

When was your last dentist appointment? Don’t worry, it’s not a trick question. This is really for the baby!

It is very important to take good care of your teeth and gums while you are pregnant.  Pregnancy causes hormonal changes that can increase your chances for gum disease, which not only affects the mom, but also the unborn baby.  Starting as early as the 1st Trimester!

Here are a few helpful tips for healthy dental practices during pregnancy, courtesy of Wildflower’s Family Health app.

Visit the Dentist: This is any easy one! If you haven't been going to the dentist regularly, make sure to go now. Tell your dentist that you are pregnant and follow up on any treatment that is recommended.

Don’t Miss the Morning: Experiencing morning sickness? This is the most important time to brush and floss. So, don’t be tempted to stop brushing regularly despite how you may be feeling. Keeping your mouth as clean as possible will help reduce dental risks.

Go Easy on Your Mouth: When you’re pregnant, your blood volume increases. Higher blood flow in your gums causes your gums to swell, which can make them sensitive. You may notice blood when you floss or brush. Use a soft toothbrush, schedule a dentist appointment, and keep brushing regularly. Your gums should return to normal not long after baby arrives.

Be Consistent: It’s important for you to keep seeing your dentist throughout your pregnancy and while you’re breastfeeding. Most dental procedures are safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you have a cavity, you should get it filled as soon as possible. Talk to your doctor about any medicines you might need before you schedule a dental procedure.
